Ellora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the largest rock-cut cave complexes in the world! The caves are located 30 kilometers or 45 minutes from Aurangabad and it is best to hire a vehicle to take you to and fro. This rocky hill face in the Western Ghats saw an incredible phase of architectural activity from the 5th to 11th century AD, and was the site of 12 Buddhist caves or monasteries -- and later, 17 Hindu temples and 5 Jain temples, numbering 34 in all. Over the thousand odd years, an amazing variety of architectural and artistic styles were showcased along this flat volcanic ridge, spread over two kilometers. Today, we will be taking you on a combined tour of the Ellora Hindu, Buddhist and Jain Caves. We will introduce you to the different architectural features of the caves and familiarize you with the various holy figures in the caves.
