Global Vipassana Pagoda

Global Vipassana Pagoda
Declared as one of the 7 wonders of Maharashtra, the Global Vipassana Pagoda has become a must visit heritage site in Mumbai. Vipassana, as per Buddhist tradition, is where mindfulness of breathing, thoughts, feelings, and actions is being used to gain insight into the true nature of reality. According to Buddhism, two qualities are rare among humans: “Katannuta" that is, gratitude and “Pubbakarita”, which is initiative to help others without expecting anything in return. These two qualities are the true measure of progress on the path of Dhamma or Dharma. The more important of the two qualities is gratitude. The pagoda is a replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda (Golden Pagoda) in Yangon, Myanmar. It was built combining ancient Indian and modern technology to enable it to last for a thousand years. The center of the Global Vipassana Pagoda contains the world's largest stone dome built without any supporting pillars. Its unique design of interlocking stones makes it possible for the dome structure to stand without pillars. The stone dome consists of three sub-domes. The first and largest dome was completed in October 2006 when bone relics of Gautama Buddha were enshrined in the central locking stone of the dome, making it the world's largest hollow structure containing relics of the Buddha. The relics were originally found in the stupa at Bhattiprolu in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, South India. The second and third domes sit atop the first dome. If you look on top, at the pinnacle of the pagoda, it is adorned with a large crystal. The spire, i.e. the conical structure of the dome is covered in real gold while the rest of the pagoda is covered in gold paint. The spire is topped with a special ornamental umbrella piece donated by the Burmese. The main doors to the pagoda are wooden and were hand-carved in Myanmar (Burma). The aim of the pagoda complex, among others, is to express gratitude to Gautama Buddha for dispensing what followers believe to be the universal teaching of the eradication of suffering. The pagoda complex also serves the purposes of educating the public about the life and teachings of the Buddha, and providing a place for the practice of meditation. It has been built in a traditional Burmese design to also express gratitude towards the country of Myanmar for preserving the practice of Vipassana.
