Science City
A trip to Kolkata is incomplete without a visit to the Science City. The Science city is a must visit weather you are going with kids or as a science enthusiast. It operates under the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It is located at JBS Haldane Avenue at the crossing of EM Bypass and Park Circus Road with the nearest landmark being Ruby Hospital. It is one of the largest and one of a kind science center in the city as well as the country. It attracts tourists within the city, and also nationally and internationally. The park opened in the year 1997. Its conceptualization is credited to Saroj Ghose who was the first director General of NCSM. The Science City was inaugurated in two parts. The first being in the year 1996 on December 21st, by Paul Jozef Crutzen in the presence of the then chief minister Jyoti Basu. The centre was opened to public on 1st July 1997, and this inauguration was done by the then Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral. The foundation stone for the second phase of the city was laid by the Ex-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the presence of the chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on 10th January 2010. The centre has different galleries and halls which mainly aim at educating the crowd with known and unknown principals of Science. Its important galleries are Dynamotion Hall, Earth Exploration Hall, Evolution Park, Maritime Centre and Space Odyssey. The Dynamotion Hall has been further divided into four sections; some interactive exhibits called Illusion, a Fresh Water Aquarium that contains 26 tanks of various varieties of fish, a Live Butterfly Enclave, and 43 exhibits on the Universe called the power of ten. The Maritime Centre beautifully explains the Maritime History of India with Dioramas, Artefacts, shipping and navigation related interactive exhibits. The Earth’s Southern and Northern Hemisphere is talked about in detail in the two storeyed Earth Exploration Hall. The Space Odyssey proudly boasts its 3D Vision Theatre, which is equipped with 150 special effect projectors and astrovision 10/70 Large-format film projection system providing a memorable 3D vision theatre. It also has a 30 seater motion simulator called the “Time Machine”. The Evolution Park is spread over 1300 sq m and has 71 robotic pre historic animals, models of early plants and 26 dinosaurs. Apart from this it also consists of an Amusement park with a number of rides, Butterfly nursery, a grand 2232 seater Theatre, Mini Auditorium and Seminar Building. It is open from 9am to 8pm all days except on Holi. It is a perfect holiday getaway for both family and friends.
