Any description of the city of Varanasi is incomplete without mention of its famous paan. Countless establishments compete against each other in creating and serving the very best of this betel leaf item in the city. Reigning supreme among them all has to be Deepak Tambul Bhandar. Located near the Dashashwamedh Ghat this is undoubtedly the most popular among all in the city.
Paan as we all know is made from beetle nut leaves with beetle nuts, lime and a selection of condiments sometimes to be eaten with a lot of tobacco in it. To the uninitiated it is advisable to be careful as some of the ingredients used can lead to discomfort and physical problems.
For all those who are desirous of trying paan in spite of it all - a safer option is the meetha paan a diluted sweeter version of the ‘big brother’ with some lime and stuffed with gulkand or sweetened rose petals, saunf or fennel seeds as well as soft and chewy supari, the famed beetle nut.
