Film City, Mumbai, Andheri

“Lights, Camera, Action!” This is the three-word spell that casts the magic of Bollywood, and this magic happens in Film City, Goregaon – for the most part. While it is a place of work for most people working in the television and film industry, for visitors it is a wonderland where everything is perfectly beautiful, impossible to differentiate between the 'real' and 'fake'. With the persuasion of visionary people like V. Shantaram, B.R Chopra, and veteran actor Dilip Kumar, Film City was established on 26th September, 1977, by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Maharashtra. In 2001, it was renamed Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari to commemorate the father of the Indian film industry, Dadasaheb Phalke. Spread over 500 acres, the integrated film studio complex is located near Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Goregaon East in Mumbai. Within the complex there are several recording rooms, gardens, lakes, theatres, and grounds that serve as the locations for many ad films, television shows, and movies. It has various kinds of sets including a temple, a prison, a lake, mountains, fountains, faux villages, picnic spots, gardens, and even an artificial waterfall. Entry to the complex is strictly by permission – to avoid any unnecessary disturbances while shooting – but after 2014 tourists have been allowed to enter the arena through a two-hour bus ride organised by Mumbai FilmCity Tours, in collaboration with Maharashtra Tourism and Film City. The tour offers a sneak peek into the hard work and labour that goes on behind the scenes of making a movie or a TV show. Bookings for the tour can be done via various channels online and offline.
