Situated within the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth campus, Varanasi is a unique temple named Bharat Mata Temple. It is located at a distance of eight kilometers from BHU, about two kilometers from Varanasi Cantonment and three kilometers west of Godaulia. As the name suggests the temple is dedicated to Bharat Mata or Mother India. This temple is the brainchild of Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta and was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1936. The statue of the Mother India is made of marble and symbolises entire India, representative of the mountains, plains and oceans that constitute the landmass of the nation. Incidentally this temple unlike all others does not have any traditional statues of Gods or Goddesses but instead houses a realistic map of the country.
The design of the statue of Mother India is a representation of all the religious deities, freedom fighters and leaders. It is thus a symbolic admiration for all those who joined hands and toiled for the formation of this great nation prior to Independence. Open from 9.30 AM to 7.00 PM the temple is a place of reverence for all those who are responsible and gave their efforts and even lives in the formation of the country.
